About Exit Studio Publishing/Sobre Exit Studio Publishing

Exit Studio Publishing was founded in 1994. Exit Studio has not only published a variety of works of interest to Puerto Rico but has also opened a door to the island’s traditions to the rest of the United States. In addition, Exit Studio presents art workshops in children’s museums across the country, gives presentations in schools and universities, and organizes community activities with such organizations as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.

Exit Studio Publishing fue creado en 1994. Exit Studio no solo ha producido una variedad de temas de interés para los puertorriqueños, sino también ha abierto una nueva puerta a nuestras tradiciones en todos los Estados Unidos de Norte América. Exit Studio ofrece talleres de arte en museos de niños a través de todos los Estados Unidos, presentaciones en escuelas y universidades, y sirve como organizador de actividades para la comunidad en colaboración con el John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, en Washington, D. C.

Edwin Fontánez embodies the essence of a true Renaissance artist, seamlessly blending his talents as an author, visual artist, and poet. With a career spanning decades, Fontánez has garnered acclaim and numerous awards for his exceptional contributions to children’s and young adult literature, illustration, and graphic design.

His creative journey began with a strong foundation in the arts, cultivated at the Madame Lucchetti Arts High School in el Condado, San Juan. He further honed his skills by earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Plastic Arts of the Puerto Rico Institute of Culture, followed by an associate degree in communication design from Pratt Institute in New York. These formative years laid the groundwork for Fontánez’s distinctive artistic style and his deep connection to themes rooted in his Puerto Rican heritage, particularly the island’s natural beauty and cultural traditions.

In 1994, Fontánez boldly established Exit Studio, a publishing house where he serves as Founding President. Under this banner, he has authored, illustrated, designed, and published works that captivate with their beauty and originality. His creations often delve into the intricate psychology of characters and explore the profound relationships between animals and humans, resonating deeply with readers of all ages.

Beyond his literary endeavors, Fontánez has dedicated himself to nurturing creativity in others. He has conducted numerous arts workshops and educational activities for children and families, collaborating with esteemed institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. His influence extends across the United States and Puerto Rico, where he has showcased his work in prestigious venues including museums and universities.

Recent highlights of Fontánez’s career include notable exhibitions at the Kennedy Center’s RiverRun festival, featuring his immersive installation “River Island,” and the 2024 REACH to Forest exhibit with “The Illuminated Forest.” These installations not only showcase his artistic prowess but also reflect his commitment to environmental themes and storytelling through visual art.

Currently based in Virginia, Fontánez continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression, leaving an indelible mark on the worlds of literature, visual arts, and education. His passion for storytelling, combined with his dedication to fostering creativity and cultural understanding, cements his legacy as a visionary artist whose work transcends borders and inspires generations.

Edwin Fontánez es un galardonado artista, autor, ilustrador y diseñador gráfico. Es graduado con un Bachillerato en Bellas Artes de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas del Instituto de Cultura en San Juan, Puerto Rico (hoy Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico). Cuenta también con un grado Asociado en Diseño de Comunicaciones del Pratt Institute de New York. Ya a los seis años, el talento de Edwin Fontánez comenzaba a despuntar, cuando hacia pequeños dibujitos en las paredes de la casa de su abuela paterna, Doña Ramona. Afortunadamente, Fontánez transfirió eventualmente sus expresiones artísticas a la libreta de dibujos y al lienzo.

El trabajo artístico y literario de Fontánez se eleva por sus temas inspirados en la naturaleza y los animales. Su obra se caracteriza por la magia y poesía que este talentoso artista imparte a su esfuerzo creativo. Su inspirado trabajo sirve como una nueva y excitante presencia en la creación de literatura infantil latinoamericana. Su obra más reciente es La última canción para mi padre, un memoria. Fontánez reside en Virginia.
